What is Semaglutide or Tirzepatide?

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists). It works by mimicking the action of GLP-1, a hormone that plays a key role in regulating blood sugar. Semaglutide stimulates insulin release in response to food, reduces glucagon secretion (which prevents the liver from releasing excess glucose), and slows gastric emptying, which helps increase feelings of fullness.

Tirzepatide is a newer medication that is classified as a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist (gastric inhibitory polypeptide receptor agonist) under the brand name Mounjaro. In addition to enhancing insulin production, tirzepatide also increases feelings of fullness, reduces food intake, and lowers blood sugar levels.

Semaglutide vs Tirzepatide

Semaglutide works solely as a GLP-1 receptor agonist in the brain, causing less hunger and reduced cravings for food. Tirzepatide, which stimulates two receptors (GLP-1 and GIP) increases general insulin sensitivity, improves glycemic control, and increases weight loss providing a greater reduction in appetite than Semaglutide alone.
