The Difference Between Botox and Fillers and How They Work to Keep You Young

Even though there are plenty of benefits to getting older, there are also a few downsides, one of which is the fact that we don’t look quite as, well, young, as we once did.

This could be because of the crow’s feet around our eyes, the forehead wrinkles we didn’t ask for, the loose skin on our face that’s starting to sag, or even the lips that are beginning to thin out.

It sounds a little depressing until you realize that help is available. At Skin Med Spa in Downer’s Grove, Illinois, our expert team uses Botox® and dermal fillers to solve all of these problems and more. In fact, more than nine million Americans take advantage of Botox and fillers each year.

Keep reading to find out how we use each one, and how they keep you looking young!

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified form of the botulinum toxin obtained from bacteria. In tiny, regulated amounts, it has been used for decades to correct wrinkles in the face caused by muscle movement. It smooths out these wrinkles by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected.

Because those muscles cannot move, the wrinkles they cause are then softened, reduced, and possibly even removed. The most common wrinkles treated with Botox are the frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal creases on the forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes, and smile and laugh lines.

The effect of removing and reducing these wrinkles is to give your skin a smoother, younger look like you haven’t seen in years.

What are fillers?

Dermal fillers are a great complement to Botox because they work differently. These soft tissue fillers also work to give you healthier, younger skin, but rather than affect your muscles, they are designed to be injected under the skin to add fullness and volume in areas that need it.

Fillers work well on any area of your face where the skin has become loose or you have lost volume over the years. They can smooth out static wrinkles where the skin has lost collagen, such as those areas around the mouth and along the cheeks. They can also fill in or soften scars and even plump up thinning lips.

Fillers make you look younger because they make your skin smoother, but also because they stimulate new collagen production that gives your skin that glow of vitality.
