BOTOX: Why Who Administers Your Treatment Matters
From the practice
You’ve finally decided to go for it. You’ve stared at those forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, and wrinkles long enough.
Botox can temporarily soften certain expression lines. The result depends on your anatomy, the treatment plan, and the person administering it.
You’ve heard Botox can get pricey, so you start to call around to look for the cheapest price. Before you choose your provider, though, our team at Skin Med Spa has a few thoughts on why who administers your Botox treatment matters:
Medical considerations
Botox Cosmetic is an FDA-approved prescription medicine containing onabotulinumtoxinA. It should be prescribed and administered through appropriately licensed healthcare professionals with training in the product and facial anatomy. Ask who will assess you, prescribe your treatment, and perform the injections, and how to contact the practice for follow-up.
A consultation should include your health history, medicines, previous injections, and treatment goals. Our providers can discuss Botox treatment and the dose appropriate for the area. Units measure the dose of medicine; they are not the number of needle injections, and units are not interchangeable between toxin products.
Placement and dose affect both the result and the risk of problems such as eyelid or brow drooping. Rare but serious toxin effects can include trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing. Seek immediate medical attention for those symptoms after an injection.
Cosmetic considerations
Though Botox can help with certain expression lines, it may not be the best cosmetic option for the concern you want to address. Our trained providers listen to your concerns and ideas. If a different treatment is more appropriate, they will explain why and discuss a plan suited to your facial anatomy.
Ask whether the product is FDA-approved and obtained from an authorized source. The FDA has reported harmful reactions to counterfeit Botox, including injections in nonmedical settings. A low price alone is not evidence of a safe product or a qualified injector.
