CoolPeel suits rough texture, enlarged pores, and sun damage on lighter skin. Opus Plasma suits mixed concerns, acne scarring, and delicate areas like the neck and chest. ResurFX suits scars, stretch marks, and deeper skin tones because it works under an intact surface. The right choice depends on your concern, your skin tone, and your calendar.

How each one works

All three create controlled injury so your skin rebuilds collagen, but they do it in different ways.

CoolPeel is a CO2 laser on the Tetra platform. Its short pulses remove a thin layer of damaged surface skin, which is why texture and pores change quickly.

Opus Plasma turns radiofrequency energy into tiny bursts of plasma that treat small dots of skin and leave the skin between them untouched. Its intensity ranges from a light refresh to deep resurfacing on the same device.

ResurFX is a non-ablative fractional laser on the Lumenis M22. It heats columns of tissue beneath the surface without removing the top layer, so the skin looks close to normal the next day, and results build over a series.

Match the device to your concern

If you feel your skin looks dull and rough under makeup and your pores have grown more noticeable, CoolPeel is usually the first recommendation. It gives the most surface change from a single visit.

If you have more than one concern, such as fine lines around the eyes, rough patches on the cheeks, and an old acne scar, Opus is often the better fit because the energy can change zone by zone. It is also the choice when crepey skin on the neck or chest bothers you as much as your face.

If your main concern is scarring or stretch marks, or you have medium to deep skin tones that tend to darken after irritation, ResurFX is usually the safer starting point. Leaving the surface intact lowers the risk of pigment changes after treatment.

When none of the three is the answer

Resurfacing improves the surface and the collagen just beneath it. It does not lift loose skin. If your main concern is laxity along the jawline or jowls, VirtueRF microneedling or an injectable plan usually makes a bigger difference. Brown spots with little texture concern often respond better to an IPL photofacial.

Why fall and winter are the usual season

Resurfaced skin is more sensitive to sun for several weeks. That is why CoolPeel and Opus are usually scheduled between October and March in the Chicago suburbs, when sun exposure is lowest. ResurFX is more flexible, but strict sunscreen still applies.

If you are also getting Botox or filler, those are placed at a separate visit, and your provider plans the order so each treatment heals before the next.

How the choice gets made at Skin Med Spa

Skin Med Spa offers all three devices, so the consultation compares them side by side rather than steering you toward the one machine in the room. Resurfacing is performed by the practice's certified laser specialists, with treatment plans set by board-certified nurse practitioners Barbara Kowalczyk, FNP-BC, and Michael Fressola, ACNP-BC. Bring photos of your skin from a few years ago and a note of any upcoming events so the plan fits your calendar.
