Essentially none. You may have mild redness for a few hours, and you can return to normal activity and makeup the same day.
Microdermabrasion is a superficial mechanical exfoliation. It buffs away the outermost layer of dead skin cells using fine crystals or a diamond tip with gentle suction. Because it only addresses the surface and does not create wounds or deep heat, recovery is minimal by design.
What to expect: skin may look slightly pink or feel mildly tight and sensitive for an hour or a few, similar to after a brisk facial. That settles quickly. Most people go straight back to work, and makeup the same day is fine.
The reasonable trade-off is depth. Because it stays superficial, microdermabrasion is excellent for dullness, mild congestion, rough texture, and giving products better penetration, but it will not treat wrinkles, acne scars, or pigmentation that lives deeper in the skin. Those need a peel, microneedling, or a laser.
Two practical notes: your skin will be briefly more sun-sensitive, so sunscreen is essential, and results are cumulative, so a series maintains the smoothness better than a one-off. It is a strong low-commitment option and a good gateway before deciding on stronger resurfacing.
At Skin Med Spa, skin resurfacing is provided by our board-certified medical team at 960 Warren Ave. in Downers Grove, Illinois. Same-day appointments are available at 630-541-8413, and a consultation is the best way to find out what fits your skin and goals.
