It depends on whether the laser is ablative or non-ablative. Non-ablative resurfacing means 1 to 3 days of mild redness. Ablative resurfacing means 5 to 14 days of visible recovery, in exchange for stronger results.
Laser skin resurfacing is not one thing, and downtime is the main dividing line, so knowing which type you are getting is essential.
Non-ablative lasers heat the deeper skin to stimulate collagen without removing the surface layer. Recovery is light, typically 1 to 3 days of redness and mild swelling, and you can usually work through it. The trade-off is that results are gradual and build over a series, since you are stimulating rather than resurfacing.
Ablative lasers, including CO2 and Er:YAG, actually remove the surface layer. This produces the most dramatic single-session improvement in deep wrinkles, scars, and significant sun damage, but recovery is real, generally 5 to 14 days of redness, peeling, and sensitivity depending on depth.
Your goal sets the path. Fine lines, tone, and mild texture do well with the lighter, lower-downtime options. Deep wrinkles and pronounced scarring justify the stronger route and its recovery.
Skin tone matters for safety. More aggressive ablative resurfacing carries higher pigment risk in darker skin, so device choice and settings must be tailored. A consultation that matches the laser to your skin type and concern is what keeps resurfacing both effective and safe.
