Lasers and light therapy can genuinely help inflammatory and cystic acne by reducing bacteria, calming inflammation, and shrinking oil glands, but severe cystic acne usually needs medical management alongside, not laser alone.
Cystic acne is deep, inflamed, and driven by overactive oil glands and bacteria. Light and laser tools address parts of that chain. Blue light targets acne-causing bacteria. IPL and certain lasers reduce inflammation and the redness that surrounds active breakouts. A newer category of lasers works by targeting the sebaceous glands directly to reduce oil production over time, which is the most promising in-office option for moderate to severe cases.
The honest framing is that laser is one lever, not the whole solution for true cystic acne. Deep, scarring cysts often need a medical approach, which can include prescription therapy, and the most severe cases are candidates for systemic treatment under a provider's care. A responsible plan combines the right in-office device with medical management rather than promising a laser will clear cysts on its own.
There is also a strong case for treating early. Cystic acne scars, and scarring is far harder to fix than the acne itself. Getting inflammation under control quickly, with whatever combination fits your severity, is the real goal. A candid severity assessment is where any good acne plan starts.
