In clinical trials, semaglutide produced an average of roughly 15% of body weight lost, and the newer dual GLP-1/GIP medication (tirzepatide) reached around 20% or more, over about 68 weeks paired with lifestyle changes. Individual results vary widely.
These medications work by mimicking gut hormones that regulate appetite and fullness. GLP-1 medications slow stomach emptying and reduce hunger signaling. The newer class adds a second hormone, GIP, which appears to enhance the effect, which is why the dual medication has shown larger average losses in studies.
The honest numbers come from major trials. Semaglutide averaged about 15% of starting body weight over roughly 68 weeks. Tirzepatide, the dual GLP-1/GIP medication, averaged around 20% and higher at top doses over a similar period. These are averages, so some people lose considerably more and some less, and the results were achieved alongside diet and activity changes, not from the injection alone.
Two realities belong in any honest conversation. First, these are prescription medications that require medical evaluation, appropriate candidacy, dose titration, and monitoring for side effects, which commonly include nausea and digestive symptoms early on. Second, weight tends to return if the medication is stopped without durable lifestyle changes, so this is a managed, ongoing treatment, not a quick fix. Treatment here is prescribed and supervised by our medical provider.
